🎣 Ella’s Middy Weekend Adventure – Open Day & Friendly Match at Woodlands Lakes, Thirsk! 🛣️🐟🏆
As soon as the school bell rang on Friday, we set off on a 3.5-hour journey up the A1(M) to Woodlands Lakes, the home of Middy HQ. We made a quick stop near Wakefield for some proper fish and chips before arriving just after 7pm — excited for what lay ahead.
🧡 Middy Open Day – Saturday Morning
Bright and early at 7:30am, we arrived at the Middy Open Day. Ella got hands-on with the latest Middy gear, including feeder and bomb rods, and soaked up valuable tips from the pros.
She also met May Potter, enjoyed some great banter with Marc, Liam, and Callum near the gazebo swim, and made some unexpected friends in the car park — including a couple of goats! 🐐
🎯 Middy Friendly Match – Saturday Afternoon

After a full morning, Ella took part in the Middy Friendly Match across Wagtail and Curlew lakes. Drawing Peg 20 on Wagtail, a spot with a solid reputation, she faced a challenging day with the wind pushing straight into the corner.
With most swims taken on both lake and many anglers struggling, Ella battled tough conditions with the wind blowing straight in her face. Using her pole with two sections shallow and on the bottom, plus four sections further out with 2 areas baited, she fished with a mix of red and white maggots and fishery pellet.
Her swim produced an early couple of carp and around 2lb of silvers. However, the howling wind pushed her pole left, causing her to lose a few fish and test her patience and concentration. While her focus wasn’t as rock solid as it could have been, Ella showed true grit — switching constantly between her feeder rod and pole to tempt larger carp and keep silvers interested.
Though the final weight wasn’t what she hoped, her determination to fish through to the end was inspiring, especially for an 8-year-old angler. She even featured live on the Middy page as she battled it out on the bank.

Every time Ella fishes, she makes massive improvements. She’s always listening closely and eagerly takes on tips and advice from other anglers, which shows in her progress and growing confidence on the bank. It’s exciting to watch her journey unfold!
